Real Madrid reclaimed the top spot after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.
However, they have performed inconsistently this season and have lacked solidarity on and off the pitch. Their attack boasting of the decorated BBC (Bale, Benzema, CR7) have looked substandard, with only Bale performing.
This is Ronaldo’s worst start to a season in Madrid jersey. The Portuguese sensation has looked dull and unmotivated; his scoring rate has also taken a toll. Once an undisputable starter, Ronaldo has seen a change of winds in Madrid dressing room with the rise of talents like Vazquez and Asensio showing great potential. While CR7’s replacement from the starting Xl still appears far-fetched, Zidane will not succumb to Madrid politics and bench the Portuguese if he does not recover quickly.
Another failing aspect of the dazzling BBC is Karim Benzema. Despite scoring on Sunday, the Frenchmen is struggling to emulate his form of last season. The return of Alvaro Morato has further added to his worries as the Spaniard has been sensational hitherto. Morata even inspired Zidane to declare him as the first choice striker recently, ahead of Benzema.
With the competition opening up further, tough decisions lay ahead of Zinedine Zidane. How long will he abide with the BBC is a matter of concern for the Los Merengues faithful.
