Antonie Griezmann’s rise to prominence in the 2015-16 season has put him in the race for Ballon d’Or but does he stand a chance in front of Barcelona superstar, Lionel Messi or his arch-rival Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo?
In recent times, Messi and Ronaldo have established dominance over Ballon d’Or exchanging last eight titles between them. Messi has won five times while Ronaldo took the title home thrice. Both Messi and Ronaldo have seen a dip in form recently, evoking new contenders for the highest individual accolade.
Griezmann’s transition from a rising talent to a world-class striker has been astounding. However, he has managed to fall just short of glory this season, which can take a toll on his Ballon d’Or prospects.
The Frenchmen finished in the third spot with Atletico in La Liga (being amongst the top scorer) and lost Champions League final to city rivals Real Madrid. He took France to Euro finals where they fizzled out in an attempt to win the Cup on home soil which eventually resulted in Ronaldo taking the Cup to Portugal for the first time. Griezmann became the Player of the Tournament and was hailed for his efforts despite the loss.
Can Griezmann break the curse to become the first new winner of the prestigious Ballon d’Or in eight years or will his talent suffer due to political nature of the award?
